McMILLIN MAGIC
Following his voracious victories in the 33rd SCORE San Felipe 250 and the 51st SCORE Baja 500 along with his second place finish in a brand new race truck at the Inaugural Lucerna SCORE Baja 400, San Diego’s ‘youthful’ veteran champion desert racer Andy McMillin continues to lead the SCORE Overall and the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck season point standings after three events in the four-race 2019 SCORE World Desert Championship.
With five career overall victories in this legendary race, McMillin, a third-generation desert racer at 32, said, “It’s been a great year for our team so far. I wish we could be going into the SCORE Baja 1000 with three wins in a row, but we came up a little bit short at the SCORE Baja 400 in September. We have a lot of confidence going into the biggest race of the year, the SCORE Baja 1000, and that’s always a key ingredient to success going into this race.”
Andy McMillin finished second behind Ryan Arciero in the SCORE Baja 400 in a field of 189 starters for the first-time race including 36 in the featured SCORE Trophy Truck division for high-tech, 950-horsepower unlimited custom trucks. McMillin, who has 11 career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins, drives the No. 31 McMillin Racing Mason Motorsports-built all-wheel drive Chevy Silverado and has a dominating 330 season point total after his twin wins and one second place.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS
“The course looks fantastic,” SCORE Overall point leader Andy McMillin went on to say. “It is everything we expect in a SCORE Baja 1000. It’s going to be a great, great race. The entire course is inspirational. This is game 7 of the World Series or The Super Bowl. Everyone wants to win this race and we are going to give it everything we’ve got to win another SCORE Baja 1000.”
RACER REGISTRATION
Online racer registration continues at www.SCORE-International.com under Race Info on the SCORE Baja 1000 page. Questions should be directed to SCORE Registration and Membership Director Audreonna Garcia at 775. 852.8907.
PRE-RUN PLANS
“My dad (Scott McMillin-a two-time SCORE Baja 1000 overall winner) and I pre-run together most of the time,” McMillin added. “It’s what has worked for us in the past and we’ve been pretty successful doing it that way. I break up my pre-runs into sections.”
Of Andy McMillin’s 11 career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins, three had his father Scott as the second driver.
COURSE THOUGHTS
Getting more specific regarding the course, Andy McMillin said, “Some sections of this course I’ve never seen before, some I’ve been running my whole life.”
Breaking down the course, McMillin commented…
Fast parts—“The beach, down from Mike’s Sky Rancho, all through the deserts around the San Felipe area and all the way through Laguna Salada.”
Slow parts—“Ojos Negros to Uruapan, the Mike’s Loop, and the new section after Laguna Salada.”
Technical parts—“Basically the Mike’s Loop is the most technical part of the race. The new section after Laguna Salada back to Ojos Negros will also be very challenging.”

OH, WHAT A COURSE!
As it has for over four and one-half decades, SCORE has put together another memorable race course for the 52nd anniversary, this one a loop race, with all of the foreboding, unforgiving terrain and inspiring beauty that the northern state of the majestic Baja California peninsula has to offer.
SCORE President/Race Director Jose A. Grijalva has designed and finalized this year’s race course of 800.5 miles. The course will have three physical checkpoints and approximately 270 virtual checkpoints along the way to the finish line. There will also be approximately 16 speed zones for a total of about 85 race miles.
Starting and finishing in the heart of Ensenada adjacent to the historic Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center, the course travels East to Ojos Negros and then runs counter-clockwise in a weaving route around both the West and then the East side of the northern part of the peninsula.
The course will run in a counter-clockwise direction after the two-way section to the Ojos Negros area and down along the Pacific Ocean through Uruapan, Santo Tomas, Erendira, Santo Domingo Wash and San Quintin.
From there it will travel Northeast going by Rancho El Coyote, across and around Mike’s Sky Rancho, down by Simpson’s Ranch. The route then continues up to a speed zone on Highway 3 before going down over Laguna Del Diablo through Morelia Junction down and back up past San Felipe before heading back up through Laguna Salada, then South back through Santa Catarina to Ojos Negros and the finish on the two-way section back into Ensenada.
The course will include going through two of Baja California’s infamous washes on the east side of the course—Matomi Wash and Amarillas Wash.
The three physical checkpoints will be located starting with Checkpoint 1 which will be near Vicente Guerrero (race mile 224.25), Checkpoint 2 will be at the El Chinero Highway 3 Road Crossing (rm535.94) and Checkpoint 3 will be near Santa Catarina (rm 708.47).
Because of two extremely challenging areas on the course, Class 7SX, Baja Challenge, Class 9, Class 11, Vintage Classes and all Sportsman classes will be running a reduced course of 701.48 total miles.
