BATTLE FOR A FINISH | October 2023 Issue
The old Baja racing adage of “you have to finish to finish first,” should have been the official tagline for the K&N 4th SCORE Baja 400 Presented by VP Racing Fuels. For many SCORE Trophy Truck racers, however, the competition is so high that the intent is now to get a win, or at the minimum place in the top five at the finish line, to get a good enough starting position for the next race. THE POWER BROKERS | September 2023 Issue
In off-road racing, the engine must be the most reliable component of any vehicle in order to finish or even have a chance at winning. Although all engines are designed to make horsepower and torque, those for off-road racing are not the same as in other motorsports. Experts in this area know engines will inherently breathe in dust, over-rev when the tires are off the ground, and are subjected to hard hits when they land. We showcase Read More

THE UNLIMITED CLASS EVOLUTION | August 2023 Issue
In off-road racing, getting any advantage by means of a starting position, a more experienced driver, or a vehicle with more horsepower or suspension travel doesn't necessarily guarantee a win. This was obvious in SCORE's early history, where the term "unlimited" in a class allowed for a variety of specialty vehicles to be built. While some had much more horsepower than their competitors and early innovations such as four-wheel drive, most of those first unlimited vehicles broke more often than they won races. These vehicles, however, would Read More

Mike Cafro was optimistic at the start of the 2022 SCORE season, thinking he could bring home a championship in the Pro UTV Open Class after previously running in the Pro Stock UTV Class and winning every race in 2021. Plans for campaigning a new and faster Polaris RZR Pro R, however, were delayed because of the availability of the vehicle itself, as well as the parts and time needed for the racing modifications. Instead, he ended up running his old car for most of the season. Despite being at a disadvantage to the other cars in the Open Class in those early races, he and co-driver Jamie Kirkpatrick managed to finish at or near the top in the first three. Read More

Despite having to replace a broken lower control arm, Kyle Quinn’s SCORE Baja 1000 turned out to be a pretty smooth race for his team as he clinched the SCORE Class 1 win at the 55TH BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000 Presented by 4 Wheel Parts. It was Wilson Racing Team’s fourth win in the SCORE Baja 1000, and second win in a row. It was also Quinn’s second win personally after a Class 10 win in 2013 with teammate Brad Wilson. Quinn’s decade-and-a-half of experience competing in both Class 1 and Class 10 paid off nicely. He credited the team’s extensive prerunning for their ability to find alternate lines around most of the hazardous rocks on the course, allowing them to maintain speed and avoid major vehicle damage problems. BUGGIES BATTLE THE COURSE | December 2022 Issue
Some of the toughest and most competitive races during the 55th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000 were in the buggy classes. In Class 1 seven competitors who are equally matched not only had to out-race each other, but also had to contend with a brutal course that took out nearly half of the competitors. In Class 10, however, the competition was so tough, the race leaders changed hands more often than in any other class, and ultimately came down to the wire as to who would cross the finish line first. By the time the four-wheel car and truck classes start the 55th BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000 Presented by 4 Wheel Parts, the course had already changed dramatically from the SCORE Trophy Trucks and Class 1 Buggies racing ahead of them. While this added to the difficulty of the course, exposing rocks and changing lines they had already mapped out, the remaining classes also had to deal with areas of large rocks that many had not encountered before. This led to more bottlenecks in some areas, especially up the Summit, and some rocky areas that broke other vehicles on the course. Read More

In the eyes of many SCORE fans, Mark Samuels is on his way to becoming a legendary off-road racer. After winning multiple SCORE Pro Moto Unlimited Championships, he is returning to race the 55th BFGoodrich SCORE Baja 1000 Presented by 4 Wheel Parts this November. But his return to race his first and only race this season is a decision that stems from a busy career and the overall costs of racing in Baja. “Most racers know the costs of entering a SCORE race, and it is what it is,” says Samuels. “I believe the reason we don’t see more moto racers come to Baja is that they simply can’t afford it.” Read More

This was Wells’ third SCORE Baja 400 Pro UTV N/A class victory in a row, and he ended up fourth overall in the UTV classes. His Polaris had no mechanical issues during the race, and as he says, “It was just gas and go for us,” referring to his one fuel stop. RACING IN THE MUD | October 2022 Issue
For SCORE’s Pro UTV racers, the course before Hurricane Kay hit the area was much different than it was on race day. While the rain had stopped about a week before the start of the 3rd SCORE Baja 400 Presented by VP Racing Fuels, sections had been washed out or became muddy. Moto and Quad classes simply went around certain muddy areas, and the SCORE Trophy Trucks and Buggies simply had enough power and tire to blast right through them. So by the time the Pro UTV classes got onto the course, there were deep pits of mud, slush, and rocks dug up by the previous classes. Read More

A flat tire early in the race led to lingering problems throughout the competition for Cody Parkhouse. Cody took over for his dad, Brian Parkhouse, shortly after the start of the race because of other commitments Brian had. But right after the start, he cut a sidewall on some brush and developed a leak in the left rear tire of the No. 100 Jimco Hammerhead. With only about a mile to their scheduled pit stop, he easily made it in for service. “Unfortunately, we didn’t quite have the smoothest tire change, and the tire wasn’t tightened up all the way. It took a while for it to loosen up and I started hearing some clicking noise about five miles before coming down the Goat Trail,” said Parkhouse. “I wasn’t sure what it was, but the car was feeling a little funny.” Read More
ROUGHED UP | October 2022 Issue
The rough, tight, and technical course of the 3rd SCORE Baja 400 Presented by VP Racing fuels was especially hard on the Class 1 buggies. Six of the best teams competed and all had to drive slower than their usual pace to complete the course, but not without additional vehicle problems along the way. Since the Class 1 competitors decided among themselves not to participate in qualifying, they agreed the starting order for their class would be in the order in which they entered the race. This put 2021 Class Champion Cody Parkhouse in the No. 100 Jimco buggy off the starting line first, followed by the No. 121 Jefferies Buggy of Damen Jefferies, and the No 138. Jimco Buggy of Kyle Quinn. Brad Wilson in the No. 153 Jimco Buggy would start fourth, followed by Brendan Gaughan in the No. 162 HMS Buggy and Cody Reid in the No. 168 Alumi Craft Buggy. Read More

THE START OF SOMETHING BIG | October 2022 Issue
The roar of 900+ horsepower engines signaled the start of the SCORE Trophy Trucks for the 3rd SCORE Baja 400 Presented by VP Racing Fuels. With Luke McMillin starting first followed by Bryce Menzies, racers in this class knew the pace would be fast and that they would have to take more chances on the course to be able to stay within passing range of these two top competitors. McMillin got a flat around race mile 70, allowing Menzies to pass and take the lead for the rest of the race. There were some issues with the Stella system so Menzies wasn’t always showing up on the SCORE Live Tracking, but visual spotters reported he was in the lead. “We started out pretty smooth, just trying to chase Luke (McMillin) down,” said Bryce Menzies. “And then from there, we just held him behind us with about a two and half-minute gap and just wanted to keep him there in case we had any issues to be able to get out in front of him again.” Read More

For the 26 SCORE TT Spec competitors at the BFGoodrich Tires 53rd SCORE Baja 500 Presented by 4 Wheel Parts, the silt was perhaps their biggest challenge. Chamlee left the starting line first in his number 700 Ford Ranger, but it didn’t’ take the Honda team with Rossi behind the wheel to catch up after leaving third behind the number 710 Chevrolet Colorado of Mike Shaffer. Baja Takes Its Revenge | December 2019 Issue
Among the field of SCORE Trophy Truck racers, there was no doubt in their minds that delaying the race for 24-hours was a wise choice. The changes it caused on the course, however, was something they couldn’t have anticipated and it had a significant outcome for many of the top teams. Starting the field was Ryan Arciero who teamed up with Dan McMillin in the number 32 Herbst/ Smith Levi’s truck. They were first on a course where the conditions were much different than what they had previously pre-run weeks before. “The weather this year put the race on a completely different level,†said Arciero. “Some of that water was so deep and the mud was so bad. I have seen a lot of SCORE Baja 1000’s and I’ve never seen anything like this.†Read More

An Aggressive Bug | November 2020 Issue
The Volkswagen Beetle-based Baja Bug has been a fixture in off-road racing for more than a half-century, and it has gone through quite an evolution over the years. The backyard modifications to bodies, suspensions, tires, and engines have given way to purpose-built, very sophisticated race machines. SCORE's Class 5 rule changes allowing the use of water-cooled engines of up to 2500cc from any manufacturer, revitalized the class several years ago by doing away with the need to use more expensive, harder to find, Volkswagen air-cooled power. Bill and Trey Hernquist’s new Class 5 car made its debut in last year's SCORE Baja 500 using a 2.4 liter GM Ecotec engine is a fine example of the latest in Baja Bug development. Read More

As you would imagine, Redline started at a very early age. “ When I was two and a half years old, my dad got me a dirt bike, and I began to ride,†says Redline. “I couldn’t stop on my own so my dad had a rope tied to the back of the bike to help me stop.†Read More

Experienced racers know that when their vehicle feels right on the racecourse, their confidence builds and it’s a recipe for a winning day. For Cody Parkhouse and his dad Brian, their three-year-old Jimco Hammerhead was still in good shape, but after finding the right suspension set-up, they were able to push their vehicle to the edge and finish fifth overall and first in class, at the 52nd BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 500. "Over the last few years, we've been massaging the suspension four different times and in doing so, we were slowly able to pick up our pace," said Cody Parkhouse. "This last tune for the SCORE Baja 500 was slight, but it made a big impact on the car. We were able to push it harder and feel more comfortable doing it, making it easier to go at max speed and feeling good about it. For my dad, he felt it was easier to drive and more compliant." Robby Gordon is Baja Ready | September 2020 Issue
Robby Gordon is busy these days, in-between a string of engineering meetings and patent consultations to talk about his strategy for the upcoming 52nd BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 500 Presented by 4 Wheel Parts. The racecourse is centered around San Felipe, and there's no doubt it will affect the outcome of the race. The "monkey wrench" in this year's SCORE International World Desert Championship racing season has been Covid-19, and the series cut down to two races, creating fewer opportunities for drivers to rack up championship points. "I haven't raced for a SCORE Championship in at least a decade," said Gordon. "We just don't have the time with Stadium Super Truck Series now, and with NASCAR and other races, we were so busy. Ironically, we had intended to run this entire year (2020) with our new AWD truck, but that got cut short." Read More

Baja Magic | August 2020 Issue
If you ask long-distance athletes why they do it, you’re likely to get many different answers. For some, it’s a bucket-list sort of thing. Others might talk about the desire to find and then stretch their physical and mental limits. A few thrive on the challenge of going long hours and many miles solo. You might say that for Arthur Babcock it was a competitive nature from an early age, an invitation to join a desert racing team a few years ago and a personal loss that eventually led to his winning Pro Moto Ironman Class at the 2019 SCORE Baja 1000. Francisco Septien began training for the Pro Moto Ironman Class in the 2014 SCORE Baja 1000 almost immediately after he attended the SCORE Baja 500 that same year. It was at the June race Francisco decided he wasn't getting any younger and had to do the "1000" solo that year or he likely would never do it. "One of my idols, when I was very young, was Ivan "Ironman" Stewart, and I have always had a lot of respect for those racing solo in their classes (trucks, buggies, or bikes) in the past or now in the Pro Moto Ironman Class," said Septien. That year, the SCORE Baja 1000 was a peninsula run that stretched approximately 1,200 miles from the start line in Ensenada to the finish line in La Paz. It was a race that would require more than just an ordinary amount of preparation. It would require all that, and inspired dedication to doing it solo. Read More
