ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico—SoCal’s youthful dynamo Christopher Polvoorde continues to lead the SCORE Overall point standings and the massive Trophy Truck Spec class as well following his stunning season-opening class victory at the King Shocks 35th SCORE San Felipe 250, a solid fourth-place class finish in the BFGoodrich Tires 54th SCORE Baja 500, presented by 4 Wheel Parts and another surprising first place in the SCORE Baja 400, presented by VP Racing Fuels.
Round 3 of the four-race 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship was held September 17-18 in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico.
After qualifying in fourth position in April’s SCORE San Felipe 250, Polvoorde, 21 of Hemet, Calif., pulled off a major upset over a race-high field of 36 starters in his class while bolting to his first SCORE Baja race victory.
In June’s SCORE Baja 500, he battled through some adversity and finished fourth out of 32 starters in his popular and competitive class.
After qualifying second in class in September’s SCORE Baja 400, Polvoorde persevered through a tough race to capture first place out of 24 starters in his growing class.
Three-quarters through the 49th season of the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Organization, the top 20 overall point leaders are separated by just 51 total points after three of four races in the 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship Overall point standings. Five classes have racers in the top 25 overall points after Round 3.
POINT REGS
SCORE point regulations has all four races counting for final points toward season point championships. Racers are allowed one substitute driver/rider for the season but the driver/rider of record has to either start or finish the season-ending SCORE Baja 1000.
SCORE points are calculated on a set amount of start points and finish points for each race along with a variable amount for placement points for finishers based on the number of starters within each class.
CP RACING STAYING ON TOP
Polvoorde may be ‘only’ 21 years old, but he has already been racing for over eight years and has evolved quickly into a SCORE Baja racing championship contender.
Polvoorde has raced in many different disciplines including Short Course, Desert Racing, Rally Racing, Midget Racing, Robby Gordon’s Stadium Trucks, Kart Racing and the King of the Hammers where he won his class in 2022.
When he isn’t driving four-wheel race vehicles, he also is an avid mountain bike racer in his limited spare time.
Driving the No. 204 CP Racing Mason Motorsports-Ford, he has earned 379 points so far in the 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship.
Polvoorde is also a full-time college student attending the University of San Diego on scholarship seeking a double major in finance and real estate through the USD School of Business.
SCORE TROPHY TRUCK LEADER
With the baby-face looks of a movie star and the heart of a lion, San Diego’s third-generation desert racer Luke McMillin, 29, has roared his way to the top of the leaderboard in the SCORE Trophy Truck division. With a first-place finish in the SCORE San Felipe 250, a sixth place in the SCORE Baja 500 and a second-place in the recent SCORE Baja 400, L. McMillin is tied for second in the SCORE Overall point standings.
The youngest of the current active McMillin racers, Luke McMillin leads the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck division for high-tech, 1000-horsepower, unlimited custom trucks with 365 points in his McMillin Racing No. 83 4 Wheel Parts All Wheel Drive Chevy 1500 built by Mason Motorsports.
Luke McMillin has three career SCORE Trophy Truck race wins and will be going for a threepeat in this year’s BFGoodrich Tires SCORE Baja 1000, presented by 4 Wheel Parts, with Las Vegas’ Rob MacCachren as his second driver. McMillin won last year’s SCORE Baja 1000 as the second driver for MacCachren and in 2020 he won the iconic race with Larry Roeseler as his additional driver.
McMillin has announced that MacCachren will be his second driver in this year’s SCORE Baja 1000 in his No. 83 Chevy truck. Last year, McMillin allowed MacCachren to run his No. 11 on McMillin’s truck and with the victory gave MacCachren the 2021 SCORE Trophy Truck season point championship.
TOP FIVE IN OVERALL POINTS
Behind Polvoorde in first and Luke McMillin tied for second, also in the top five SCORE Overall point leaders three quarters of the way through the 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship is tied for second place Jorge Sampietro, Ensenada, Mexico, No. 297 Mason-Chevy (Trophy Truck Spec) with 365 points, while fourth place is Rob MacCachren, No. 1 Ford F-150 (Geiser, SCORE Trophy Truck) with 353 points and fifth is Mason Cullen, Long Beach, Calif., No. 207 Geiser-Chevy (Trophy Truck Spec) with 352 points.

QUINN CONTINUES ATOP IN CLASS 1
For many years a second driver for the wonderful Wilson Motorsports team, Kyle Quinn, 34, Long Beach, Calif., stepped into the lead driver position in one of the team’s entries this year and won the unlimited Class 1 at the SCORE San Felipe 250 in the No. 138 Chevy-powered Jimco open-wheel desert race car.
With regular DOR Brian Wilson not available for all races in 2022, Quinn took the lead and shares driving duties in San Felipe with Brian Wilson’s uncle Ronny Wilson, 60 of Long Beach, Calif. At the SCORE Baja 400, with Brian Wilson’s cousin Brad Wilson as the second driver, Quinn finished on the podium in third place again and lead Class 1 with 305 points.
SALVATIERRA LEADS PRO MOTO OVERALL
After winning the season point championship for two consecutive years in the brutally tough Pro Moto Ironman class for solo riders, Bolivia’s acclaimed Juan Carlos Salvatierra moved to the Pro Moto Unlimited class this year and has won the fastest class on two wheels in all three of his first attempts in this legendary class.
In San Felipe, his co-riders were Mexico’s Arturo Salas Jr, 19, and Shane Logan, 20, Lake Havasu City, Ariz. For the SCORE Baja 500 in Ensenada, Salvatierra added Argentinian rally racer Diego Llanos to his team for his second straight class win. For the year, Salvatierra now has 322 season points as the SCORE Overall motorcycle point leader in his No. 10x KTM 450SX-F motorcycle.
At the SCORE Baja 500, Salvatierra and his team gave KTM its first overall moto win in the 54-year history of the iconic race.

Considered the most important athlete in the history of Bolivia, in 2011, Salvatierra became the first athlete from Bolivia to race in the Dakar Rally. He is also a nine-time Bolivian National Motocross champion.
He capped his incredible 2021 season by riding solo on his No. 725x motorcycle in the 54th SCORE Baja 1000 to a winning tedious time of 34 hours, 39 minutes, 13 seconds over the brutally-tough 1226.35-mile race course.
TIE & SUPER-TIGHT CLASS BATTLES
Helping reflect the intensity of the raging battles in many of the SCORE competition classes, one classhas two racers tied at the top of their leaderboard. Further, one class is separated by one point, two classes have first and second separated by just five points and four more classes have the top two racers with just six points between each heading into the season finale.
The class tied after three of four 2022 races is Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction). That class also has third place just two points back and third place is only four points behind the co-leaders heading into the SCORE Baja 1000.

In San Felipe Pro UTV FI had 29 starters and in Ensenada, the popular UTV class saw 24 vehicles take the green flag in June and then 23 in September.
There were a total of 38 starters in the five UTV classes in the most recent SCORE Baja 400.
