David Ruvalcaba, Brandon Wright, Faelly Lopez and the Baja Pits organization were all major winners Saturday night (Jan. 28) as SCORE International officially concluded the 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship with the celebratory crowd of nearly 500 at the SCORE Awards Night Gala in the San Diego Air & Space Museum at historic Balboa Park. The 2022 SCORE Awards show is available on the SCORE website at www.SCORE-International.com, the SCORE You Tube channel and the SCORE TV Platform. The 40-page digital version of the event commemorative program previews the show and salutes the 2022 SCORE point champions in text and images. It is also available on the SCORE website. SCORE Off-Roadsman of the Year awards were officially presented in 14 categories along with the 54 winners of the Rod Hall SCORE Milestone Awards, presented by Toyota Escondido, as well as the overall and class point champions of the four-race 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship. The event, with the gregarious Rat Sult as the host once again, assisted by veteran voice Dave Arnold, was also a celebration of 49 years of SCORE championship desert racing. “We want to sincerely acknowledge the support, assistance and sacrifices made by family members, friends and sponsors--because without their support, the accomplishments of our racers in the series would not have been possible,” commented Jim Ryan, SCORE Vice-President of Marketing and Sales. “Becoming a SCORE overall or class point champion, winning a coveted SCORE Off-Roadsman Award or a Rod Hall SCORE Milestone Award, presented by Toyota, are all achievements of the highest degree in our beloved sport.” SCORE PERSON OF THE YEAR SCORE President/Race Director Jose A. Grijalva and SCORE General Manager Juan Tintos Funcke teamed up to honor Marina Del Pilar Avila Olmeda, Governor of the State of Baja California as the 2022 SCORE Person of the Year. Marina Del Pilar was born in Mexicali, Baja California, and later began her political career five years ago, when she was first elected as a Federal Legislator for Baja California. In 2019 she became the first woman elected Mayor of Mexicali, the State Capital of Baja California. Two years later, she became the youngest Governor in the history of the state and the first woman to be elected as the Governor of Baja California in a landslide victory. Tintos Funcke commented, “Governor Marina Del Pilar has long been a fan and supporter of SCORE and our SCORE Baja races. We first worked with her when she was the Mayor of Mexicali on the SCORE San Felipe 250 and then she stepped up and gave all of her support in 2020 to organize the special edition of SCORE Baja 500 in San Felipe at the height of the COVID-19 situation. We have received all her support and that of her team since 2021 when she elected State Governor of Baja California. We are honored that she would accept this award that she truly deserves as the 2022 SCORE Person of the Year." SCORE OFF-ROADSMAN OF THE YEAR AWARDS The SCORE Off-Roadsman awards were determined by online vote of SCORE members as well as the general public. Among the other honorees were the class point champions and top-class point leaders from the four-race 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship, the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Series. RACERS CAME TO SHINE Among the 2022 final season podium award recipients present at the presentations were USA racers from Arizona, California, Florida, Nevada, Texas, Utah, and the U.S. Territory of Puerto Rico. Besides the USA, other countries represented at the awards were from Bolivia, Canada, Mexico and Peru. BFGOODRICH TIRES ROCKS BFGoodrich Tires, the official tire of SCORE for 47 years, received one major Off-Roadsman of the Year award. BFGoodrich Tires was honored as the SCORE Contingency Company of the year for the 32nd time. BFGoodrich Tires has been the choice of 34 of the 54 overall winners of the popular SCORE Baja 500 and 33 of the 55 overall winners of the iconic SCORE Baja 1000. BFGoodrich Tires also was the title sponsor of both iconic races again in 2022. And will be again in 2023. BFGoodrich Tires also has been the choice of 30 of the 35 overall winners of the SCORE San Felipe 250, all three SCORE Desert Challenge races, the one SCORE Challenge of Champions race, the one SCORE Baja Sur 500 and one of three overall winners of the SCORE Baja 400. BAJA PITS WINS A well-know and much-used service organization out in the desert, Baja Pits was voted as the 2022 SCORE Pit Support Team of the Year. Under the long-time direction of Carlos Orozco, Baja Pits was started in 1985 and for 32 years has provided extensive full-service and emergency-service pits along every one of the SCORE race courses. Their service is offered for all classes competing in the SCORE World Desert Championship. Based in El Cajon, Calif., this is the fourth time that the popular group has won this award. The other three times they won were 2009, 2011 and most recently in 2014. ‘THE LUKE’ OVERALL Following his third consecutive SCORE Trophy Truck race victory in the iconic 2022 SCORE Baja 1000, San Diego’s Luke McMillin was officially crowned the SCORE Overall, SCORE Trophy Truck season point champion and SCORE Overall Truck point champ of the four-race 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship. For ‘The Luke,’ it was his second season point championship in three years in the marquee SCORE Trophy Truck division and the first SCORE Overall season point crown in his ever-expanding resume. With the baby-face looks of a movie star, the heart of a lion and the tenacity of a Grizzly bear, San Diego’s third-generation desert racer ‘The Luke’, 29, roared his way to the top of the point leaderboard in the SCORE Trophy Truck division and eventually the top of the SCORE Overall point leaderboard as well in 2022. Driving solo the first three races of the year, ‘The Luke’ finished first in the SCORE San Felipe 250, sixth place in the SCORE Baja 500, second-place in the SCORE Baja 400 and capped the season with the help of the G.O.A.T. (Las Vegas’ Rob MacCachren who drove the first 394 miles) by winning the season-ending SCORE Baja 1000 to complete his championship 2022 season in the SCORE World Desert Championship. The Luke drives his McMillin Racing No. 83 4 Wheel Parts All-Wheel Drive Chevy 1500 built by Mason Motorsports. SCORE ROOKIE From San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico, strongman Faelly Lopez was voted the 2022 SCORE Rookie of the Year in the 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship and he was competing in just the first full season of the Pro Quad Ironman class for solo riders. Lopez, 39, started 2022 by winning his class in the season-opening SCORE San Felipe 250 in April on his No. 83a Honda TRX450R. The ‘Puerto Rican Force’ covered the 277.00-mile race course in 9:47:10. After not being able to finish his first SCORE race at the 2021 SCORE Baja 1000 that went down the peninsula from Ensenada to La Paz, Lopez recovered and won SCORE’s newest class in the first three 2022 SCORE races and eventually won SCORE Pro Quad Ironman season point championship. Lopez now joins previous winners of the SCORE top rookie award like Frank Vessels (1974), Jimmie Johnson (1995), Ricky Johnson (1993), Robby Gordon (1987), Doug Fortin Jr (1988), Bekki Freeman-Wik (1998), Andy McMillin (2004), Brian Wilson (2009), Luke McMillin (2010), Bryce Menzies (2011), Tony Gera (2014), Carlos ‘Apdaly’ Lopez (2015), Chad Broughton (2016), Broc Dickerson (2017), A.J. Jones (2019) and Cayden MacCachren (2021). WRIGHT WAY Another of the top honorees was Brandon Wright. Following several seasons co-rider on winning Pro motorcycle age group classes, Wright, 46, Oak Hills, Calif. not only won the Pro Moto Ironman (for solo riders) class in this year’s King Shocks SCORE San Felipe 250 over 10 starters in his class, he won the season championship in his class and earned the 2022 SCORE Overall Motorcycle title as well with second-place finishes in the second and third SCORE Baja races and a third-place finish in the SCORE Baja 1000 out of 20 starters in 2022. Wright rode the No. 750x Husqvarna FE501 motorcycle. After a pre-running accident for the SCORE Baja 1000 caused him to withdraw from the race, he later decided (with approval from his doctor) to re-enter the race and he courageously battled to a podium finish to earn his two crowns. VILDOSOLA RACING PULLS TRIPLE Mexico’s Vildosola Racing was honored with three major SCORE awards in 2022. Team Patriarch Gustavo Vildosola Sr, of Mexicali, himself was honored as the 2022 SCORE TT Legend season point champion after an undefeated season with additional driver Ricky Johnson in the class for SCORE Trophy Truck drivers over 50 years old. Vildosola Sr, who drives the No. 21L Vildsola Racing Ford Raptor AWD SCORE Trophy Truck built by Mason Motorsports, won the class title for the second time, the first being in 2018. Steve Lewis, a veteran member of Vildosola Racing, was voted the 2022 SCORE Team Manager of the Year for the first time in his long career. And Vildosola Racing received another award during the exciting evening as Andres ‘Lechero’ Rodriguez was voted the 2022 SCORE Mechanic of the Year. It was the third time he has been honored with this award as he won it in 2018 and 2021 as well when he worked for MacCachren Motorsports. SCORE OVERALL OPEN-WHEEL Among the other honorees during the 2022 Gala was Mexico's J. David Ruvalcaba, of Ensenada who won Class 10, was the SCORE Overall Open-Wheel point champion and was eighth in overall points. A former SCORE motorcycle champion racer, Ruvalcaba was sixth place in his class of 19 starters in San Felipe and 11th place out of 26 starters in Ensenada in June and winning Class 10 out of 18 starters in Ensenada in September and third in Ensenada in November out of 23 starters in his No. 1009 Alumi Craft-Honda open-wheel desert race car. His primary second driver was Esteban Cruz, also of Ensenada. The Lomitas Racing Team picked up their fourth SCORE season class point crown in 2022 (2000, 2001, 2019, 2022). They won on motorcycles the first two times, in Class 1/2-1600 in 2019 and Class 10 in 2022. BUROUGHS KING OF UTVs Another of the top honorees was Matt Burroughs. With three fourth-place finishes and one ninth-place, consistency provided big dividends for Burroughs as he won the 2022 Pro UTV FI (Forced Induction) class championship, but also the SCORE Overall UTV point championship as well with his 485 season points. All the numbers added up and his point total placed him fifth in the 2022 SCORE Overall point standings as well. Burroughs, 53, Norco, Calif., a Can-Am Factory driver, drove his No. 2948 Monster Energy Can-Am X3 to his second season championship in three years. In 2020 he was also the SCORE Overall point champion. The largest UTV class in the SCORE World Desert Championship saw 29 starters in the SCORE San Felipe 250, 24 in the SCORE Baja 500, 23 in the SCORE Baja 400 and 27 in the SCORE Baja 1000. There was a total of 55 starters in the five SCORE UTV classes in the season-ending SCORE Baja 1000. SCORE MANUFACTURER POINTS Manufacturer point titles won were led by Mason Motorsports of Lake Elsinore, who have burst onto the scene building all-wheel drive SCORE Trophy Trucks among many other classes of vehicles. It was their second consecutive SCORE Original Truck Chassis Manufacturer of the Year point title. Founded in 2004 by brothers Neal and Robert Mason, Mason Motorsports is producing some amazing AWD trucks. Earning their sixth SCORE Engine Builder of the Year point championship in 2021, Dougans Racing Engines won the points in this award in this category for the sixth time in the last eight years. Based in Riverside, Calif., Dougans Racing Engines is led by Ray Field, who has been a part of Dougans since 1980. Based in Santee, Calif., Alumi Craft won the Open Wheel Chassis Manufacturer point championship for the fourth time, all in the last seven years and two straight years. Founded in 2004, more and more Alumi Craft vehicles are appearing on the SCORE race entry lists. In the eighth year decided by points, Polaris RZR Industries (Off-Road) won the 2022 SCORE UTV Manufacturer of the Year points for the eighth straight year. KTM won the 2022 SCORE Motorcycle Manufacturer of the Year Award for the sixth time and fourth time in the last five years. SCORE MILESTONE AWARDS Another element of the diverse award’s program was the presentation of the 2022 Rod Hall SCORE Milestone Awards, presented by Toyota Escondido. As it has for 37 years, the coveted SCORE Milestone Awards were presented to those drivers who finished all required miles as official finishers in each of the four races of the 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship. A record total of 54 racers completed all 1926.19 required miles as official finishers in the four-race 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship. Since 2014 motorcycle and quad classes have been eligible for the award along with the pro car, truck and UTV classes. SCORE SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARDS SCORE General Manager Juan Tintos Funcke presented several SCORE Special Recognition Awards, mostly to Mexican officials who all orchestrated and oversaw so many details to allow SCORE to hold its four 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship events. Receiving these special awards were Marina del Pilar Avila Olmeda, Governor of the State of Baja California; Miguel Aguiniga Rodriguez, Baja California State Secretary of Tourism and Armando Ayala Robles, Mayor of Ensenada. The additional recipients included: Jorge Lopez Peralta, San Quintin Mayor; Jose Luis Dagnino Lopez, San Felipe Mayor; and Andres Martinez Bremer, President of the Baja California State Tourism Promotion Trust. The other SCORE Special Recognition Awards were presented to Andy Kirker, SCORE Advisor and Alejandro Nunez, SCORE Volunteer. NEWS FLASH: BAJA VIDA SNACKS Among the many SCORE marketing updates presented during the SCORE Awards Night Gala, Jim Ryan, SCORE Vice-President of Sales and Marketing, announced that Baja Vida Snacks, which includes the popular Baja Vida Jerky brand, has become the Official Snacks of SCORE International as well as the presenting sponsor of the King Shocks 36th SCORE San Felipe 250. The event, which launches the 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship, will be held March 28-April 2 in San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico. SCORE MEDIA AWARDS Gabriel Garcia, co-owner of Podio Media MX in Ensenada, former staff writer/reporter and current freelance writer/reporter/columnist for Ensenada’s El Vigia Newspaper and SCORE Social Media reporter/videographer for Mexico, was voted for the third time (2011, 2014, 2022) as the SCORE Journalist of the Year. Mexico’s accomplished veteran photographer Ernesto Araiza (Off-RoadRacer.com—Oceanside, Calif.) earned the SCORE Photographer of the Year honors for the second time (second straight year) in his illustrious career. Winning the SCORE Videographer of the Year award for the first time was John Tuba of Lake Havasu City, Ariz. (Tuba Art Films). GRANDEST MARSHAL Among the very special guests at the 2022 SCORE Awards Night was the iconic Sal Fish, the godfather of SCORE International. Fish, the key person with SCORE for 38 years of the organization, from 1974 until he sold the organization at the end of the 2012 season, has agreed to participate in the 50th anniversary season of SCORE as the primary Grand Marshal for all four races in the 2023 SCORE World Desert Championship. “I am truly humbled and blessed by this opportunity,” said the affable Fish, 83, who splits his time with his wife Barbara between their home in Malibu, Calif., and their condo in La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico. “For those that know me, you know how much I love Baja and the passion I have for SCORE and all the people that have been involved with SCORE for 50 years now. SCORE is an amazing international motorsports treasure and I am fired up to shake some more hands and tell some more tales of a lifetime of memories.” SHOW CREDITS The 2022 SCORE Awards Night Gala was produced by a large group from SCORE International. Producer of the show was Aaron Laub of SCORE Media House and director was Alberto Luna. Hosts for the event were popular SCORE Live lead announcer Rat Sult along with veteran voice Dave Arnold. Dominic Clark, longtime SCORE Media Operations Director along with SCORE Vice President of Marketing and Sales Jim Ryan developed the script for the show. Also providing editorial and content input were Jose A. Grijalva, SCORE President and Race Director and Juan Tintos Funcke, SCORE General Manager. Coordinating and overseeing the multitude of elements overall and especially for the logistical portion of the event was Elise Norman and her support personnel including coordinator David Duenas. The show included colorful videos and photographic tributes to the 2022 SCORE World Desert Championship provided by racers, BCII TV, SCORE Live and Art Eugenio, GetSomePhoto.
