     ENSENADA, Baja California, Mexico—With significant ties to SCORE desert racing are six of the eight new inductees to the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame (ORMHOF). The ORMHOF Class of 2025 will be honored during an elaborate ORMHOF gala, presented by SPEED UTV on Sunday, Nov. 2 at Michael Gaughan’s South Point Hotel, Casino & Spa in Las Vegas.

     Announced by ORMHOF in July, the 2025 class that will be inducted into the ORMHOF in Las Vegas are Class of 2025: Frank Currie, Bob Fox, Nate Hunt, Mike Julson, Lonnie McCurry Sr., Keith Purmal, Clyde Stacy, and Dan Vanden Heuvel.

     Fox, Hunt, Julson, McCurry Sr., Purmal, and Stacy all have had direct ties during their illustrious careers to SCORE International and the annual SCORE World Desert Championship as champion racers, vehicle builders, manufacturers, industry leaders, team members, and product specialists.

     SCORE veteran staffers Christine Wait and Lawton Shank to receive the special 2025 Louis Unser ‘Never Give Up’ Award from ORMHOF.

     With these eight to be enshrined in November, it will bring the number of inductees in the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame to 148 total.

     Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame inductees represent excellence and achievement in many areas of off-road, including advocacy, industry, rock sports, desert racing, short course, and rally racing.

SCORE Baja 1000

     The BFGoodrich Tires 58th SCORE Baja 1000 will be the season-finale of the four-race 2025 SCORE World Desert Championship. The ‘Granddaddy of all Desert Races’ will be held Nov. 10-16 in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico.

     SCORE is celebrating its 52nd year in 2025 as the World’s Foremost Desert Racing Organization.

     Nearly 250 vehicles are expected at the start line for this iconic SCORE Baja race with racers from as many as 35 U.S. States and 20 countries anticipated.

2025 ORMHOF IMPACT AWARDS

     The Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame also recognizes 2025 Impact Award honorees in six categories:  Adventure, Desert Racing, Industry, Moto|ATV, Industry (including Advocacy and Media), Rock Sports, and Short Course.

     Ten of the 18 honorees have significant ties to SCORE desert racing: Andrew Comrie-Picard (Adventure), Alan Ampudia (Desert Racing), Brock Heger (Desert Racing), Adam Householder (Desert Racing), Greg Adler (Industry), Emily Miller (Industry), Andy Kirker (Moto|ATV), Arturo Salas Jr (Moto|ATV), Loren Healy (Rock Sports), and Beau Judge (Short Course).

ORMHOF CLASS OF 2025—SCORE CONNECTIONS

Here’s a brief look at the six ORMHOF inductees and their ties to SCORE…

     Bob Fox (Industry)—After 50 years of industry-leading innovation, Bob Fox is being welcomed to a well-deserved place in the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame. 

     In the chronicles of off-road motor sports, there are a few names that rise to the level of luminary in each genre. They were pioneers and innovators, often developing far-fetched ideas under a shade tree on a shoestring budget. Fox, founder of The FOX Factory and member of the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame Class of 2025.

     An engineer by trade and an amateur motocross racer on weekends, Fox realized that the big-travel suspension movement of the 1970s presented an opportunity for someone who could build a better mousetrap. In an interview, Bob said, “The need was created by broken shocks and disappointed racers. I thought they need better shocks, and maybe I can do it. I started designing with pencil and paper and manufactured my first shocks in a friend’s garage…you don’t know any better when you are young. They were called Fox Airshox, and racers started using them.” 

     Within three years, FOX had helped motocross icons Kent Howerton, Brad Lackey, and Marty Smith win AMA Motocross Championships and the Motocross Grand Prix, and sales went from 200 to 10,000 units that year. Fox continued, “The long-travel revolution of the 1970s is really what made FOX the company it is today.”

     During the 1980s, the company expanded its product lines to include shocks for four-wheeled vehicles, snowmobiles, and a new craze called mountain biking. Partnering with top-tier athletes, FOX added numerous victories and championships to its resumé.  Among those FOX heroes in the SCORE World Desert Championship has been Rob MacCachren, the G.O.A.T. of off-road racing and the winningest SCORE Trophy Truck racer in the history of SCORE.

     The following decades found FOX developing damping devices for OEM offerings, such as the Ford Raptor, as well as prosthetic limbs for water and snow skiers, and, of course, motocross riders. Whether it has been King of the Hammers rock racing, SCORE International desert racing events, Indy 500, CART World Series, or AMA Championships, Fox’s grassroots upstart from the 1970s has worked hand-in-hand to help teams achieve not only their dreams, but top rungs on the podium. Fox said, “When you do what you love doing, you do it well.”

     ORMHOF inductee and SCORE racing legend Roger Mears said, “I have had the privilege of knowing Bob for decades, and few individuals have had as significant or lasting impact on the evolution of off-road racing as he has. His relentless drive to improve performance made a direct impact on my success on the track. Beyond the hardware, Bob has always embodied the spirit of off-road. He is a racer at heart, an engineer by trade, and a pioneer by nature. His fingerprints can be found on nearly every major advancement in off-road suspensions over the past 40 years.”

     Nate Hunt (Industry)— Always the guy working beyond the bunting to make stuff happen, Nate Hunt’s connection and contributions to off-road racing are undeniable.

      After cutting his teeth as a seasonal warehouse hand for Jackson-Dawson Motorsports, Hunt was quickly promoted to managing Michelin race tires, then on to event coordinator, managing programs for OEMs like Volvo and BMW, as well as celebrities such as Richard Petty. Knowing talent when he saw it, Hall of Fame inductee Frank DeAngelo brought Nate into his team at Jackson Motorsports. He excelled in the new position of Program Manager for BFGoodrich Tires, one of the company’s largest clients. It was here that the dust, grit, sweat, and tears of desert racing permeated his genetic makeup. 

     Providing key support to BFG’s efforts in short course, desert racing, and rock sports, Nate was the guy behind the scenes, managing logistics and putting out fires. His next assignment, which he mastered over the past 15 years, was working with SCORE International in developing race routes, defining pit locations, access tracks, driver notes, and creating GPS files. 

     Hunt’s passion for Baja and its people goes beyond the usual armchair referee. He has been an active participant in south-of-the-border charities supporting disaster relief, schools, and missions. Recently helped raise significant funding for a young girl fighting cancer, as well as a cattle ranching family that had lost nearly everything to a hurricane. 

     Sal Fish, Hall of Fame inductee and 38-year President of SCORE International, said, “From the very beginning of his time in the desert, Nate was filled with passion, dedication to the industry, working diligently for the betterment of the sport. The effect has been significant growth in our industry while at the same time putting together programs that give back to the people of Baja.”

     Hunt has volunteered his time to work with ORMHOF’s Nomination Committee and currently serves on the ORMHOF Board of Directors.

     Mike Julson (Industry)—In the 1960s and 70s, Southern California became the epicenter of desert racing, home to dozens of grassroots events and a petri dish for creative minds to develop means-to-an-end products. In 1975, Mike Julson found himself in the mix when his father Jim built a one-off Class 9 chassis for them to race.

     They did well, were soon inundated with orders, and moved from the family garage to a new shop; Jimco Racing Products was born. A quick study, Mike Julson worked with his dad developing new products and managing race programs, and eventually took the reins.

     Throughout his career, Mike has been more than just a fabricator and business owner. From his early days, he learned that the best way to evaluate a product was seat time on the track. During his tenure, he claimed numerous overall wins and championships in SCORE, Pro Dirt, Fud, and Best in the Desert. The resumé of accolades attributed to Jimco chassis and products, however, reaches the world over. As the brand celebrates its Golden Anniversary, it has chalked up an unprecedented 25 Chassis Manufacturer of the Year Awards from SCORE International. 

     Former SCORE President Sal Fish said, “The opportunity to endorse the nomination of Mike Julson is one that I certainly could not pass up. Under his guidance, for decades, Jimco firmly set the bar on performance and excellence. Mike, and his father Jim – not to mention son Matt – are yet another example of off-road racing’s real strength. Like the McMillins, the Herbsts, the Gordons, and many more, family is at the heart of it all.” 

    Jimco was also the breeding ground for some of our industry’s greats, such as ORMHOF inductee John Marking and Alumicraft founder John Cooley. The late great Hall of Fame inductee Robbie Pierce purchased Jimco in 2018, and the company was later acquired by the Navarro family. Rafael Navarro IV recalled, “When I was a youngster and didn’t have enough money to build a new car, Mike always took the time to speak with me. He was always great with me, and I loved that.”  

     Lonnie McCurry Sr (Industry)— Like so many of ORMHOF inductees began Lonnie McCurry Sr’s story under a backyard shade tree or in the family garage, and McCurry Sr’s chronicle represents the epitome of a home-brewed American dream.

     While spending weekends with friends “mud digging” in the Louisiana backcountry, he realized the only way to win was with larger, taller tires and began designing suspension products. In 1971, he and his wife Nell built a small cinderblock garage behind their house, and it was here that Lonnie McCurry’s 4Wheel Drive Center was born. 

     During an interview with Hall of Fame inductee and prominent Journalist Rick Péwé, McCurry Sr  said, “I thought I’d died and went to Heaven. I could crawl under a Jeep and lay on concrete. We even had electricity and lights. My sweet wife was our marketing agent, and I made parts. Those were good times.”

     In 1973, they opened their first brick-and-mortar storefront and created Skyjacker Suspensions. From these humble origins, the duo developed a company and brand name that became permanently embedded in the lexicon of the off-road industry. 

     McCurry Sr pioneered innovative industry firsts, including products for Fords, Chevys, mini truck conversions, Jeeps, and Scouts. Reflecting on those early days, he said, “Others said it was impossible, but impossible is what I enjoy. It’s what we do.” It was this ethos that ultimately led to building custom suspensions for U.S. forces in Afghanistan. 

     From the beginning, Skyjacker gained a reputation for sponsoring and often competing in nearly every mud drag, four-wheel drive, and rock crawling event around the country. ORMHOF inductee and SCORE racing champion Curt Leduc said, “Like so many founders of our sport, he saw a need for products that did not exist. With determination and the help of family and friends, he built a brand that still stands for quality and performance. He’s not the man with a wall of trophies, but with his support, he allowed many in our sport to fill rooms with trophies. A truer mentor I have never met.”

     In 2024, Skyjacker celebrated its 50th anniversary, and although it had expanded its shop several times, the cornerstones of that original store still lay beneath its current 80,000-square-foot facility. With three generations involved in managing the still-family-owned business, and a loyal staff of more than 50, Lonnie credits his success not only to his family, friends, and industry partners, but also to his faith in God.

     Keith Purmal (Volunteer)—There are hundreds of people working behind the scenes at any given desert race. They volunteer to manage logistics, pit stops, tech inspections, scoring, staging, registration, and contingency. These unsung heroes of our sport are sometimes seen, but rarely heard. Unless, of course, you are Keith Purmal.

     Purmal’s voice is the one that crackles to life over the radio when the world goes pear-shaped. Akin to ORMHOF Hall of Famer and SCORE radio voice Bob Steinberger, aka The Weatherman, for more than 40 years, he has organized race communications for events such as the Silver State Classic, Whiskey Pete’s Hare and Hound, Vegas to Reno, Parker Dam 500, and Mint 400. 

     His story began like many others, with him volunteering on a pit crew. But as his penchant for radios evolved, his focus turned to helping race teams stay in communication with organizers and emergency medical services. Day or night, in the pre-dawn morning hour or redeye midnight, it is Purmal responding when call in support is needed. 

     Donald Jackson of the Legacy Racing Association commented, “There is nobody in radio communications that has a calmer demeanor and ability to think clearly in life and death situations than Keith Purmal. Never rattled by the circumstance, Keith is steady as a rock.”

     Best in the Desert Owner Bryan Folks said, “My history with Keith dates back to the mid-70s when he was a teenager coming to our house and working with my father on race radio communications. I remember as a racer listening to the BITD race communications channel and being enamored by how organized the process was. It seemed to flow with real purpose and no worry. I attribute much of BITD race day success to Keith.” 

     After volunteering countless hours to various organizations, Keith has never pursued the spotlight, and like most behind-the-scenes members of our community, will never boast a case full of trophies. ORMHOF values much more than podiums and shiny things, and we are delighted to welcome Keith Purmal, one of the unsung heroes of our sport, with our Class of 2025 inductees.  

     While SCORE still has the Steinberger family handling racer communications at its events, Purmal has been part of the volunteer crew for Las Vegas’ Collins Motorsports (including Brendan Gaughan and Dallas Lutrell) for nearly 25 years.

     Clyde Stacy (Competitor)— With deep roots in Virginia’s coal and entertainment industries, when Clyde Stacy turned his attention west toward desert racing (at over 65 years old), he took it by storm.    

     As the co-founder of RPM Racing with Justin Matney, he has blended his assertive management style with a passion for being behind the wheel.

     During his tenure, Stach has piloted everything from Class 5-1600 buggies and Full Stock, to Class 2, 4, and 8 platforms, claiming numerous SCORE wins and championships along the way. Stepping up to the SCORE Trophy Truck league in 2013, he took home the prestigious Rod Hall SCORE Milestone Award six out of the following seven years.

     Whether it is a SCORE, NORRA, HDRA, or Best in the Desert event, we can usually find Stacy and the RPM team in the pits preparing for the green flag. 

     Prior to the green flag, however, is where Stacy has forged his mark. Embracing the Baja culture, over the years, and with a desire to race in the SCORE Baja 1000 for over 20 years when he was too involved with his career to do it, he has worked with and supported various orphanages and struggling families, focusing on providing opportunities to aspiring local drivers and bringing them on his race team, where they might otherwise be sidelined. Two of RPM’s Mexican nations who were SCORE race champions are Apdaly Lopez and Eduardo Laguna.

     “Clyde is humble and down-to-earth, never wanted to be in the limelight, and you wouldn’t know he had two nickels to rub together. But he has always been there to lend support where it is needed. One of the nicest guys you will ever meet.” — Frank DeAngelo, ORMHOF Class of 2013

     High on Clyde’s bucket list has been to have an RPM driver achieve a victory in every SCORE class, and they are well on their way. But along the way, he has also invested heavily in assisting event promoters, as well as, innovated race technology such as the Geiser twin-engine all-wheel drive SCORE Trophy Truck.

     Motorsports icon and ORMHOF Class of 2019 inductee Robby Gordon shared, “Clyde’s impact in off-road racing extends far beyond his impressive record of victories. As a competitor, team owner, and ambassador for the sport, he has consistently demonstrated the passion, perseverance, and commitment that defines true desert-racing legends. A generous supporter of the racing community, Clyde has provided countless drivers with opportunities to launch and advance their careers, helping the next generation of desert-racing champions.”  

LOUIS UNSER ‘NEVER GIVE UP’ AWARD

     The Louis Unser ‘Never Give Up’ Award, presented by Riviera Racing, is given each year to an individual who demonstrates a pursuit of excellence in the face of adversity. Louis Unser relentlessly fought through health issues to persevere in his passion for engine building. Like Louis, SCORE veteran staffers Christine Wait and Lawton Shank have exemplified a 'Never Give Up' attitude in life and in their SCORE careers.

    Retirees from the corporate world, lifelong friends Christine Wait, 78, and Lawton Shank, 89, are both being awarded the 2025 Louis Unser ‘Never Give Up’ Award.

     After the 2024 season, Wait and Shank were awarded with SCORE Lifetime Achievement Awards for their incredible 12 years of service to SCORE International. And both have been dealing with serious health issues for over a decade.

     Working together out of their office in Las Vegas, it’s kind of hard to describe all that they have done and continue to do assisting the SCORE operations in Ensenada, Baja California, Mexico, and in Reno, Nev. The four-race SCORE World Desert Championship, which is completing 52 years, has been held exclusively in Baja California for the last 10 years.

     The new era of SCORE International began in 2013 and Wait and Shank were brought in as part of the original key management team with Roger and Elise Norman after having worked with the Normans on the administrative team during the two-year history of re-introduced High Desert Racing Association (HDRA) in 2012 and 2013.

      “Christine and Lawton do so many, many things for SCORE, it’s impossible to narrow it down, so it’s better to say that they do almost all of the above on the administrative side of our operation,” praised Jose Abelardo Grijalva, SCORE President and Race Director.

     “Their commitment is unparalleled, their passion is unequalled, and their service is unreachable. Individually, they have both done so much to support the operation and administrative side of SCORE that we are forever grateful.”

     The list of their SCORE operations support and involvement goes much longer than anyone can imagine. Suffice it to say that the active engagement from Christine and Lawton has contributed significantly to first the transition between ownerships of SCORE at the end of 2012 and the accelerated development of SCORE during these ever-changing times in motorsports and Mexico.

     Always a collaboration with the two of them, among the many areas that they so successfully contribute to include insurance waiver forms for racers, staff, sponsors, VIPs, and media, details and negotiations surrounding SCORE racer insurance coverage, multi-page racer briefs for each event, racer email bulletins, maintaining and amending the SCORE Rule Book, Racing Timing oversight, organizing and overseeing regular staff telephone conference calls, updating SCORE racing point standings, assisting with racer registration, Contingency program payouts, operational on-site security band elements, racer relations, vehicle number assignments, etc., etc., etc.

     Before joining SCORE, Christine, and Lawton both assisted the local SNORE racing organization in Las Vegas in various capacities for four years prior to working with HDRA and then SCORE.

     The Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame was established in 1978 to recognize and honor those individuals and organizations whose lifelong contributions to off-road motorsports have set a standard for others to follow. In 1995, the late legendary off-road racer Rod Hall became ORMHOF chairman, a position he held for more than twenty years, before selecting current chairman Mark McMillin as his successor.

     The mission of the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame is to educate and inspire present and future generations of the off-road community by celebrating the achievements of those who came before.

       SCORE celebrará en 2025 su aniversario 52 como la organización líder mundial en carreras fuera de camino, esperando la participación de casi 250 equipos provenientes de 35 estados de los Estados Unidos y 20 países.

PREMIOS IMPACTO 2025

       El Salón de la Fama del Off-Road también reconocerá a los homenajeados con los Premios Impacto 2025 en seis categorías: Aventura, Carreras Fuera de Camino, Industria, Motos, Industria (incluyendo Defensa y Medios), Deportes de Roca y Short Course.

       De los 18 galardonados, diez tienen vínculos significativos con las carreras fuera de camino de SCORE: Andrew Comrie-Picard (Aventura), Alan Ampudia (Carreras de Off-Road), Brock Heger (Carreras de Off-Road), Adam Householder (Carreras de Off-Road), Greg Adler (Industria), Emily Miller (Industria), Andy Kirker (Motos), Arturo Salas Junior (Motos), Loren Healy (Rock Crawling) y Beau Judge (Short Course).

PERFILES DE ENTRONIZADOS AL SALÓN DE LA FAMA

        Bob Fox (Innovador y constructor de vehículos de Off-Road)- Después de 50 años de innovación como líder en la industria, Bob Fox tendrá su merecido lugar en el Salón de la Fama del Off-Road.

         En las crónicas de las carreras fuera de camino, hay algunos nombres que se elevan al nivel de luminarias en cada disciplina. Fueron pioneros e innovadores, desarrollando a menudo ideas audaces bajo la sombra de un árbol y con presupuestos limitados. Fox, fundador de la empresa de amortiguadores Fox, es ahora miembro de la Clase 2025 del Salón de la Fama del Off-Road.

         Ingeniero de profesión y piloto amateur de motocross en los fines de semana, Fox comprendió que el movimiento de suspensiones de largo recorrido de la década de 1970 representaba una oportunidad para alguien capaz de construir un mejor sistema.       En una entrevista, Bob comentó: “La necesidad surgía de los amortiguadores quebrados y de los pilotos decepcionados. Pensé que necesitaban mejores amortiguadores y que quizá yo podía hacerlo. Empecé a diseñar con lápiz y papel y fabriqué mis primeros amortiguadores en el garaje de un amigo… cuando eres joven no sabes mucho. Se llamaban Fox Airshox, y los pilotos comenzaron a usarlos.”

        En apenas tres años, FOX ayudó a íconos del motocross como Kent Howerton, Brad Lackey y Marty Smith a ganar los campeonatos AMA Motocross y el Motocross Grand Prix, y las ventas pasaron de 200 a 10 mil unidades en ese mismo año. Fox agregó: “La revolución de las suspensiones de largo recorrido en los años 70 fue realmente lo que convirtió a FOX en la compañía que es hoy.”

        Durante la década de 1980, la empresa amplió sus líneas de productos para incluir amortiguadores para vehículos de cuatro ruedas, motos de nieve y la nueva tendencia del ciclismo de montaña. Asociándose con atletas de primer nivel, FOX sumó numerosas victorias y campeonatos a su trayectoria. Entre los héroes de FOX en el Campeonato Mundial de SCORE se encuentra Rob MacCachren, considerado el el mejor corredor en la historia del Off-Road y el piloto más ganador de Trophy Trucks en la historia de SCORE.

        En las décadas siguientes, FOX desarrolló dispositivos de amortiguación para modelos OEM, como la Ford Raptor, así como extremidades para prótesis para esquiadores acuáticos y de nieve y, por supuesto, pilotos de motocross. Ya sea en competencias como King of the Hammers, eventos de SCORE International, Indy 500, la serie CART o campeonatos AMA, la empresa fundada por Fox en los años 70 ha trabajado de la mano con los equipos para ayudarlos a alcanzar no solo sus sueños, sino los lugares más altos del podio. Fox afirmó: “Cuando haces lo que amas, lo haces bien.”

       Roger Mears, miembro del Salón de la Fama del Off-Road y leyenda de las carreras de SCORE, comentó: “He tenido el privilegio de conocer a Bob durante décadas, y pocas personas han tenido un impacto tan significativo y duradero en la evolución de las carreras fuera de camino como él. Su impulso incansable por mejorar el rendimiento tuvo un impacto directo en mi éxito en las pistas. Más allá del sistema de ingeniería, Bob siempre ha encarnado el espíritu del Off-Road. Es un corredor de corazón, ingeniero de profesión y pionero por naturaleza. Sus huellas están presentes en casi todos los avances importantes en suspensiones de este deporte durante los últimos 40 años.”

         Nate Hunt (Campeón y leyenda del desierto)-Siempre dispuesto a trabajar más allá de lo evidente para que las cosas sucedan, la conexión y las contribuciones de Nate Hunt al automovilismo fuera de camino son indiscutibles.

         Tras iniciarse como trabajador temporal en el almacén de Jackson-Dawson Motorsports, Hunt consiguió rápidamente un ascenso a la gestión de llantas Michelin en competencias, para luego convertirse en coordinador de eventos, manejando programas para fabricantes de automóviles como Volvo y BMW, así como para celebridades como Richard Petty. Reconociendo el talento cuando lo veía, el miembro del Salón de la Fama Frank DeAngelo incorporó a Nate a su equipo en Jackson Motorsports. Destacó en su nuevo puesto como Gerente de Programas para BFGoodrich Tires, uno de los clientes más importantes de la compañía. Fue allí donde el polvo, la arena, el sudor y las lágrimas del desierto se impregnaron en su esencia.

      Proporcionando apoyo clave a los esfuerzos de BFGodrich Tires en short course (carreras de circuito cerrado), carreras de desierto y rock crawling, Nate era el hombre detrás de escena, gestionando la logística y resolviendo problemas. Su siguiente misión, que ha perfeccionado durante los últimos 15 años, fue trabajar con SCORE International en el desarrollo de rutas de carrera, definición de ubicaciones de pits, accesos, notas para pilotos y la creación de archivos GPS.

       La pasión de Hunt por Baja y su gente va más allá de un simple espectador. Ha participado activamente en organizaciones benéficas del sur de la frontera, apoyando la ayuda ante desastres, escuelas y misiones. Recientemente ayudó a recaudar fondos significativos para una niña que lucha contra el cáncer, así como para una familia ganadera que perdió casi todo a causa de un huracán.

       Sal Fish, miembro del Salón de la Fama del Off-Road y presidente de SCORE International durante 38 años, afirmó: “Desde el inicio de su tiempo en el desierto, Nate demostró pasión, dedicación a la industria y un trabajo incansable para el mejoramiento del deporte. Su impacto ha sido un crecimiento significativo de nuestra industria, al mismo tiempo que ha desarrollado programas que benefician a la gente de Baja.”

       Hunt ha ofrecido su tiempo como voluntario en el Comité de Nominaciones del Salón de la Fama del Off-Road y actualmente forma parte de la Junta Directiva del recinto de los inmortales en Las Vegas, Nevada.

       Mike Julson (Diseñador y constructor icónico)-En las décadas de 1960 y 1970, el sur de California se convirtió en el epicentro de las carreras en el desierto, hogar de decenas de eventos de base y un verdadero semillero para mentes creativas que desarrollaban productos con fines prácticos. En 1975, Mike Julson se vio involucrado cuando su padre, Jim, construyó un chasis único de la Clase 9 para que pudieran competir.

      Tuvieron buenos resultados, pronto se vieron inundados de pedidos y pasaron del garaje familiar a un nuevo taller; así nació Jimco Racing Products. Rápidamente aprendiendo, Mike Julson trabajó junto a su padre desarrollando nuevos productos y gestionando programas de carreras, hasta que eventualmente asumió el liderazgo de la empresa.

       A lo largo de su carrera, Mike ha sido mucho más que un fabricante y propietario de una compañía. Desde sus primeros días, aprendió que la mejor manera de evaluar un producto era poniéndolo a prueba en la pista. Durante su trayectoria, consiguió numerosos triunfos generales y campeonatos en SCORE, Pro Dirt, Fud y Best in the Desert. Sin embargo, el historial de logros atribuidos a los chasis y productos Jimco alcanza reconocimiento a nivel mundial. Al celebrar su Aniversario de Oro, la marca ha acumulado un récord sin precedentes de 25 premios al Fabricante de Chasis del Año otorgados por SCORE International.

        El ex presidente de SCORE, Sal Fish, comentó: “La oportunidad de respaldar la nominación de Mike Julson es algo que ciertamente no podía dejar pasar. Bajo su liderazgo, durante décadas, Jimco ha establecido firmemente el estándar en desempeño y excelencia. Mike y su padre Jim —sin olvidar a su hijo Matt— son otro ejemplo del verdadero valor de las carreras fuera de camino. Al igual que los McMillins, los Herbst, los Gordons y muchos más, la familia está en el corazón de todo.”

         Jimco también fue la cuna de algunos de los grandes de nuestra industria, como el miembro del Salón de la Fama del Off-Road, John Marking y el fundador de Alumicraft, John Cooley. El fallecido y gran miembro del Salón de la Fama, Robbie Pierce, adquirió Jimco en 2018, y más tarde la compañía fue comprada por la familia Navarro. Rafael Navarro IV recordó: “Cuando era un joven y no tenía suficiente dinero para construir un auto nuevo, Mike siempre se tomaba el tiempo para hablar conmigo. Siempre fue muy amable conmigo, y eso me encantaba.”

          Lonnie McCurry Señor (Pionero del desierto)- Como ocurrió con muchos de los integrantes del Salón de la Fama del Off-Road, la historia de Lonnie McCurry Señor comenzó bajo un árbol en el patio trasero o en el garaje familiar, y la crónica de McCurry representa el epítome del sueño americano hecho en casa.

          Mientras pasaba los fines de semana con amigos “excavando en el barro” en el campo de Luisiana, se dio cuenta de que la única manera de ganar era con llantas más grandes y altas, y comenzó a diseñar productos de suspensión. En 1971, él y su esposa Nell construyeron un pequeño garaje de bloques de cemento detrás de su casa, y allí nació el 4Wheel Drive Center de Lonnie McCurry.

           En una entrevista con Rick Pewe, periodista destacado e integrante del Salón de la Fama del Off-Road, McCurry comentó: “Pensé que había muerto y había ido al cielo. Podía meterme debajo de un Jeep y acostarme sobre el concreto. Incluso teníamos electricidad e iluminación. Mi dulce esposa era nuestra agente de marketing y yo fabricaba las piezas. Fueron tiempos muy buenos.”

           En 1973, abrieron su primera tienda física y crearon Skyjacker Suspensions. Desde esos humildes comienzos, la pareja desarrolló una empresa y una marca que se han consolidado permanentemente en el léxico de la industria fuera de camino.

           McCurry Señor fue pionero en innovaciones que marcaron precedentes en la industria, incluyendo productos para Ford, Chevy, conversiones de mini trucks, Jeeps y Scouts. Al reflexionar sobre aquellos primeros días, dijo: “Otros decían que era imposible, pero lo imposible es lo que disfruto. Es lo que hacemos.” Este espíritu fue lo que finalmente llevó a la empresa a fabricar suspensiones personalizadas para las fuerzas estadounidenses en Afganistán.

            Desde sus inicios, Skyjacker ganó reputación patrocinando y, a menudo, compitiendo en casi todos los eventos de lodo, vehículos 4x4 y rock crawling en todo el país. Curt Leduc, integrante del Salón de la Fama del Off-Road y campeón de SCORE, dijo: “Como muchos fundadores de nuestro deporte, vio la necesidad de productos que no existían. Con determinación y la ayuda de su familia y amigos, construyó una marca que aún representa calidad y rendimiento. No es un hombre con una pared llena de trofeos, pero gracias a su apoyo permitió que muchos en nuestro deporte llenaran salas con trofeos. Nunca he conocido a un mentor más genuino.”

           En 2024, Skyjacker celebró su aniversario 50, y aunque ha ampliado su taller en varias ocasiones, los cimientos de aquella tienda original aún se encuentran bajo su actual instalación de 80 mil pies cuadrados. Con tres generaciones involucradas en la gestión de la empresa, que sigue siendo familiar, y un equipo leal de más de 50 empleados, Lonnie atribuye su éxito no solo a su familia, amigos y socios de la industria, sino también a su fe en Dios.

            Keith Purmal (Voluntario)— Hay cientos de personas trabajando detrás de escena en cada carrera fuera de camino. Se ofrecen como voluntarios para gestionar la logística, los pits, las inspecciones técnicas, la puntuación, el orden de salida, el registro y los programas de contingencia. Estos héroes anónimos de nuestro deporte a veces se ven, pero rara vez se escuchan. A menos, por supuesto, que estés con Keith Purmal.

            La voz de Purmal es la que cobra vida por la radio cuando el mundo parece desmoronarse. Similar al miembro del Salón de la Fama del Off-Road y voz de la radio de SCORE, Bob Steinberger, conocido como The Weatherman, durante más de 40 años, Purmal ha organizado las comunicaciones de carrera en eventos como Silver State Classic, Whiskey Pete’s Hare and Hound, Vegas to Reno, Parker Dam 500 y Mint 400.

           Su historia comenzó como la de muchos otros, ofreciendo su tiempo como voluntario en un equipo de pits. Pero a medida que su inclinación por las radios evolucionó, su enfoque se dirigió a ayudar a los equipos de carrera a mantenerse en comunicación con los organizadores y los servicios médicos de emergencia. Ya sea de día o de noche, en las primeras horas del amanecer o en la medianoche, Purmal responde cuando se necesita apoyo.

            Donald Jackson, de Legacy Racing Association, comentó: “No hay nadie en comunicaciones por radio que tenga una calma y capacidad de pensamiento tan clara en situaciones de vida o muerte como Keith Purmal. Nunca se altera por las circunstancias; Keith es firme como una roca.”

           Bryan Folks, propietario de la organización Best in the Desert, dijo: “Mi historia con Keith se remonta a mediados de los años 70, cuando era un adolescente que venía a nuestra casa y trabajaba con mi padre en las comunicaciones de radio de las carreras. Recuerdo que, como corredor, escuchaba el canal de comunicaciones de BITD y me fascinaba lo organizado que estaba todo. Todo parecía fluir con un propósito real y sin preocupaciones. Atribuyo gran parte del éxito de los días de carrera de BITD a Keith.”

            Después de ofrecer innumerables horas de voluntariado a diversas organizaciones, Keith nunca ha buscado el protagonismo y, como la mayoría de los miembros detrás de escena de nuestra comunidad, nunca presumirá de una vitrina llena de trofeos. El Salón de la Fama del Off-Road valora mucho más que los podios y los objetos brillantes, y nos complace dar la bienvenida a Keith Purmal, uno de los héroes anónimos de nuestro deporte, con nuestra Clase 2025.

         Aunque SCORE sigue confiando en la familia Steinberger para manejar las comunicaciones con los corredores en sus eventos, Purmal ha formado parte del equipo de voluntarios de Collins Motorsports en Las Vegas (incluyendo a Brendan Gaughan y Dallas Lutrell) durante casi 25 años.

        Clyde Stacy (Líder y promotor del deporte)- Con profundas raíces en las industrias del carbón y el entretenimiento de Virginia, cuando Clyde Stacy dirigió su atención hacia las carreras en el desierto (a más de 65 años), lo hizo de manera espectacular.

        Como fundador de RPM Racing junto a Justin Matney, ha combinado su estilo de gestión firme con una pasión por estar tras el volante.

         Durante su trayectoria, Stacy ha pilotado desde “bajitas” en la Clase 5-1600 y Full Stock, hasta vehículos de la Clase 2, 4 y 8, logrando numerosas victorias y campeonatos en SCORE a lo largo del camino. Al incorporarse a los SCORE Trophy Trucks en 2013, se llevó a casa el prestigioso premio Rod Hall SCORE en seis de los siete años siguientes.

          Ya sea en eventos de SCORE, NORRA, HDRA o Best in the Desert, normalmente encontramos a Stacy y al equipo RPM en los pits preparando todo para la bandera verde.

          Sin embargo, antes de que caiga la bandera verde es donde Stacy ha dejado su huella. Adoptando la cultura de Baja, a lo largo de los años, y con el deseo de competir en la SCORE Baja 1000 durante más de 20 años cuando sus compromisos profesionales se lo impedían, ha trabajado con diversos orfanatos y familias en situación de vulnerabilidad, enfocándose en brindar oportunidades a pilotos locales prometedores y llevándolos a su equipo de carreras, donde de otro modo podrían haber quedado al margen. Dos de los pilotos mexicanos de RPM que se coronaron campeones en carreras de SCORE son Apdaly López y Eduardo Laguna.

       “Clyde es humilde y sencillo, nunca quiso estar en el centro de atención, y no parecería que tuviera dos centavos para frotar juntos. Pero siempre ha estado presente para brindar apoyo donde se necesita. Uno de los tipos más agradables que jamás conocerás”, afirmó Frank DeAngelo, miembro del Salón de la Fama del Off-Road en la Clase 2013.

        Entre los grandes objetivos de Clyde ha estado el lograr que un piloto del equipo RPM gane en todas las clases de SCORE, y están bien encaminados. Pero, en el camino, también ha invertido significativamente en apoyar a los promotores de eventos, así como en innovar en tecnología de carreras, como el SCORE Trophy Truck de la marca Geiser que cuenta con dos motores.

        El ícono del automovilismo y miembro del Salón de la Fama en la Clase 2019, Robby Gordon, compartió: “El impacto de Clyde en las carreras fuera de camino va mucho más allá de su impresionante récord de victorias. Como competidor, propietario de equipo y embajador del deporte, ha demostrado consistentemente la pasión, perseverancia y compromiso que define a las verdaderas leyendas de las carreras en el desierto. Generoso con la comunidad de las carreras, Clyde ha brindado a innumerables pilotos oportunidades para iniciar y avanzar en sus carreras, ayudando a la próxima generación de campeones del desierto.”

PREMIO LOUIS UNSER “NUNCA TE RINDAS”

        El Premio Louis Unser “Nunca te rindas”, presentado por el equipo Riviera Racing, se otorga cada año a una persona que demuestra una búsqueda de la excelencia frente a la adversidad. Louis Unser luchó incansablemente contra problemas de salud para seguir su pasión por la construcción de motores. Al igual que Louis, los veteranos del personal de SCORE, Christine Wait y Lawton Shank, han ejemplificado una actitud de “Nunca te rindas”, tanto en la vida, como en las carreras de SCORE.

        Tras retirarse del mundo corporativo, los amigos de toda la vida Christine Wait, de 78 años, y Lawton Shank, de 89, recibirán el Premio Louis Unser “Nunca te rindas” 2025.

        Después de la temporada 2024, Wait y Shank fueron galardonados con los Premios a la Trayectoria de SCORE por sus increíbles 12 años de servicio a SCORE International. Ambos han enfrentado serios problemas de salud durante más de una década.

          Trabajando juntos desde su oficina en Las Vegas, es difícil describir todo lo que han hecho y continúan haciendo para apoyar las operaciones de SCORE en Ensenada, Baja California, México, y en Reno, Nevada. El Campeonato Mundial del Desierto de SCORE International, que se celebra desde hace 52 años, ha tenido lugar exclusivamente en Baja California durante los últimos 10 años.

           La nueva era de SCORE International comenzó en 2013, con Wait y Shank siendo incorporados como parte del equipo de gestión clave junto a Roger y Elise Norman, tras haber trabajado con ellos en el equipo administrativo durante los dos años de historia de la organización High Desert Racing Association (HDRA) en 2012 y 2013.

          “Christine y Lawton hacen muchísimas cosas por SCORE, es imposible resumirlo, así que mejor decir que hacen casi todo lo relacionado con la operación administrativa de nuestra organización”, elogió José Abelardo Grijalva, presidente de SCORE International y director de carrera.

            “Su compromiso es inigualable, su pasión es única y su servicio es insuperable. Individualmente, cada uno ha hecho tanto para apoyar la operación y el lado administrativo de SCORE que siempre estaremos agradecidos”.

             La lista de su apoyo e implicación en SCORE es más extensa de lo que cualquiera podría imaginar. Basta decir que su participación ha sido clave, primero, durante la transición de propiedad de SCORE a finales de 2012, y después, en el desarrollo acelerado de la organización en estos tiempos de constantes cambios en el automovilismo y en México.

               Siempre trabajando en colaboración, entre las muchas áreas en las que contribuyen con éxito se incluyen: formularios de exención de responsabilidad para pilotos, personal, patrocinadores, invitados VIP y medios de comunicación; detalles y negociaciones sobre seguros de corredores; informes de varias páginas para cada carrera; boletines por correo electrónico para pilotos; mantenimiento y actualización del Reglamento de SCORE; supervisión del cronometraje; organización de llamadas telefónicas regulares con el personal; actualización del standing de puntos; asistencia con el registro de pilotos; pagos del programa de contingencia; seguridad operativa en los sitios de carrera; relaciones con los pilotos; asignación de números de vehículos, entre muchas otras tareas.

              Antes de unirse a SCORE, Christine y Lawton colaboraron durante cuatro años con la organización local de carreras SNORE en Las Vegas, desempeñando diversas funciones antes de trabajar con HDRA y posteriormente con SCORE.

SALÓN DE LA FAMA DEL OFF-ROAD

             El Salón de la Fama del Off-Road fue fundado en 1978 para reconocer y honrar a aquellas personas y organizaciones cuyas contribuciones de por vida al automovilismo fuera de camino han marcado un estándar a seguir. En 1995, el legendario piloto de Off-Road, Rod Hall se convirtió en presidente del recinto de los inmortales, cargo que mantuvo durante más de veinte años antes de nombrar a su sucesor, Mark McMillin.

            La misión del Salón de la Fama del Off-Road es educar e inspirar a las generaciones presentes y futuras de la comunidad en este deporte, celebrando los logros de quienes les precedieron.

            El proyecto mantiene una colección de vehículos clásicos exhibidos en museos del país, así como un amplio archivo digital de impresos, imágenes y videos, al que se sigue agregando contenido según se dispongan de fondos.
